Geriatric Insights on Elderly Women and Heart Disease

2017

Purpose of Review: The prevalence of heart diseases is growing in recent years and will further rise because of the increased longevity of elderly population, mainly reported for the female gender. Recent Findings: Several studies have demonstrated the presence of a large sex-specific variability on physiopathology, presentation, and overall prognosis of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Women, in particular, tend to present heart diseases generally later than men, have a higher number of comorbidities, and report worse outcomes. Moreover, atypical symptomatology of heart diseases in older women constitutes a potential source of delay in the identification of such pathologies, influencing the …

Modeling the Macroeconomic Effects of Pension Systems

2021

This chapter aims to achieve a socioeconomic perspective on the financial resources of the elderly population, considering the recommendation of international bodies as OECD, WB, EC to diversify financial resources, on one hand by joining private pension funds and, on the other hand by increasing the degree of personal saving. The objective of this chapter pursued the econometric study of the macroeconomic effects of pension systems, in terms of the close correlation between several specific indicators oriented toward macroeconomic stability, the development of the financial sector, and the structure of national pension systems in CEE countries.

Casteldaccia eye study: prevalence of cataract in the adult and elderly population of a Mediterranean town.

1994

Prevalence of cataract was studied in a population based survey performed in adults aged 40 years or more living in Casteldaccia, a small Sicilian town. Lens opacities of moderate or severe grade (type II or worse, according to the Lens Opacity Classification System II) were found at the following rates: nuclear opalescence in 18.5%, cortical cataract in 12.9%, posterior subcapsular cataract in 10.8%. All these types of cataract were much more frequent in the elderly population and were about 1.5 times more common in women than in men. Late cataract was found in about 1/3 of subjects aged 60 to 69 years, in 2/3 of subjects aged 70 or more, but rarely under 60 years of age. However, early ca…

Biomarkers and Inflammatory Network in Aging

2014

Abstract Humans are characterized by a large heterogeneity in lifespans. The aging rate, measured as a decline of functional capacity and stress resistance, is different in every individual. Several attempts have been made to define the so-called biological age, but without achieving real success. Biomarkers of aging, which are represented by biological indicators selected using appropriate criteria, should help to characterize the biological age. Since age is a major risk factor in many degenerative diseases, such biomarkers could subsequently be used to identify individuals at a high risk of developing age-associated diseases or disabilities. In this chapter, some inflammatory biomarkers …

Comparison of repositioning maneuvers for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo of posterior semicircular canal: advantages of hybrid maneuver.

2012

Objective: The prevalence of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is becoming more frequent in elderly population. The presence of comorbid factors has to be considered before assessment as well as before commencing any repositioning treatment. Our aims were evaluation of the maneuvers efficacy and evaluation of the applicability of hybrid maneuver (HM) in patients with physical limitation. Study design and setting: This is a randomized study in 2 tertiary referral centers. Intervention: This is a therapeutic intervention. Patients: All consecutive patients with diagnosis of BPPV of posterior canal matching the inclusion criteria were enrolled. Patients underwent treatment soon after…

Alternative ways of expressing FEV1 and mortality in elderly people with and without COPD

2013

Expressing forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) as % predicted relies on the assumption of proportional variability and generalisability of prediction equations that may be unrealistic, especially for elderly people. We evaluated the prognostic implications of alternative ways of expressing FEV1. We enrolled 318 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and 475 controls in the Salute Respiratoria nell'Anziano (SARA) study. The risk for 5-, 10- and 15-year mortality associated with FEV1 was studied by expressing FEV1 % pred, standardised by height cubed (FEV1 · Ht(-3)) and as a multiple of the sex-specific first percentile (FEV1 quotient (FEV1Q)). In the group with COPD, t…

Asthma in the older adult: Presentation, considerations and clinical management

2015

Asthma affects older adults to the same extent as children and adolescents. However, one is led to imagine that asthma prevalence decreases with aging and becomes a rare entity in the elderly. From a clinical perspective, this misconception has nontrivial consequences in that the recognition of the disease is delayed and the treatment postponed. The overall management of asthma in the elderly population is also complicated by specific features that the disease develops in the most advanced ages, and by the difficulties that the physician encounters when approaching the older asthmatic subjects. The current review article aims at describing the specific clinical presentations of asthma in th…

The impact of polypharmacy and drug interactions among the elderly population in Western Sicily, Italy.

2017

Aim: Primary endpoint was to report polypharmacy distribution in the general population vs ≥65 years old people and to examine the frequency of drug–drug interactions (DDIs) in the Health Local Unit of Palermo, Italy, in relationship with patients’ age. Methods: Drug prescription data for the year 2014 were extracted from the database of the Local Health Unit of Palermo Province, Italy. Patients were divided into five age groups (0–13, 14–64, 65–69, 70–74, and ≥75 year old). The detection of potential DDIs in polypharmacy profiles was performed with NavFarma software (Infologic srl, Padova, Italia), with DDI classification provided by tool Micromedex Drug Reax (Truven Health Analitics, Mich…

Lipid nutrition and eye health

2010

Revue non indexée dans le JCR.; International audience; According to demographic forecasts, the elderly population will represent a growing part of the developed societies in the near future. Eye diseases are the second most prevalent pathologies after the age of 65 years. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of irreversible vision loss in western countries. The number of people suffering from ocular pathologies is expected to increase sharply in the near future, becoming a socio-economic burden. Recent data indicate that lipid nutrients may represent new tools in the prevention of eye diseases, and especially AMD.
